"Perfect on Paper" Can Hide the Ugliest Truths (or why due diligence are SO important)

A client recently contacted me to conduct enhanced due diligence for a critical leadership hire. Their HR team had already shortlisted four finalists, and one candidate seemed to be the clear winner.

On paper, he was the dream hire:

Elite education — Prestigious academic credentials.

Charismatic leadership — The kind of presence that inspires confidence.

Impressive CV — A career filled with high-profile roles.

Strong family background — Connections in powerful circles.

But once we began the background check, the truth unraveled:

Failed leadership track record — Every company he managed had collapsed.

Personal financial troubles — Significant debts raising questions about judgment.

Flashy lifestyle — Extravagance masking potential instability.

Key findings — Evidence of drug use, erratic behavior, and signs of severe emotional distress.

The Question: Should Drug Use Be a Disqualifier?

💡 My perspective: Not necessarily.

Drug use among high-level executives and leaders is more common than most realize. Many use stimulants or other substances to cope with intense professional pressures.

But the red flags go deeper:

⚠️ Instability — Can this individual handle the demands of leadership under pressure?

⚠️ Impulsivity — Will their decisions endanger the organization?

⚠️ Reputational risk — What happens when personal behavior becomes public knowledge?

⚠️ Team dynamics — Can someone struggling personally provide stable and effective leadership?

Why Enhanced Due Diligence Matters

This case is a prime example of why enhanced due diligence and screening are essential when hiring for leadership positions. A CV alone cannot reveal the complete picture, and every decision made at the top has far-reaching consequences.

When conducting a background check for employment or leadership roles, the goal isn’t to pass judgment. It’s about gaining the clarity and insight to make an informed decision. Without this level of awareness, even the most impressive candidate can bring significant risk.

Avoid the Cost of a Bad Hire

Whether you’re evaluating:

🔍 A CEO or executive hire.

🔍 A business partner or investor.

🔍 A client with high stakes...

Skipping proper due diligence could cost you:

💥 Your reputation — Public scandals spread quickly.

💥 Your finances — The wrong hire can drain resources.

💥 Your team — Poor leadership destabilizes the workplace.
